dA version

Think of a person you feel is an effective rhetorician (this can be anyone – someone famous, someone you know, etc) and discuss the following. 1) Who is she/he? What methods do they use (where do you encounter her/his rhetoric)? In what forum do they use rhetorical appeals (the classroom, the football field, church, etc)? 2) Why are they effective? 3) How has his/her/their contribution as a rhetorician actually influenced or affected your life? What can you deduce about their methods? Remember, you are obviously a “member” of this already persuaded audience – were you always? 4) How might knowledge of this person and her/his methods help you produce an effective collaborative proposal that actually incites people to change?

An effective rhetorician. Let’s see, I’m going to go ahead and assume rhetorician is some sort of jargon for a person who uses rhetoric and argues things effectively. I think I’m gonna go with Razmere. He’s a guy here on dA and over on YouTube, now that I think about it I should of just used one of his videos for Blog #3, oh well no crying over spilled milk. Razmere often uses comedy in his arguments, but he can be serious and is at appropriate times too.

One of his things that I like to watch whenever I feel like things are getting tough, convoluted, or otherwise overwhelming is his Believe! Rant, [link] It just makes me think, Alright! I can do this. He uses nice dramatic music making it clear that this is going to be a serious thing that he’s talking about. And he addresses the issue, making a nice reference to an anime at one point which makes it even more motivating since in the anime the kid it gets said to then goes on to take out a giant mech. It’s one of those David and Goliath things. You see this scrawny little guy go and do something amazing and you think. Hey, if he can do it so can I!

Razmere’s target audience is made up of young adults who watch like to watch anime. His references, word choice, tone, music, and overall presentation is highly entertaining, grabs your attention, and makes it hard not to get excited about what he’s talking about. Assuming you were targeting a similar audience his methods could help you persuade them, although since his methods seem mostly internet based it might require some tweaking to work on groups in different settings.

dA version

Gender is, according to the WHO (no not the band, or The Doctor), the roles of men and women that have been established by a society. And where is my copy of that excerpt from Becoming a Visible Man, I’m a little upset that I can’t find it because it was an interesting read. I’ll find it later, for now I’ll just work from memory. Gender from Green’s perspective, if memory serves, wasn’t something that should be defined by what parts you were born with, but was a state of mind you were born with. For many people these two things coincide, but not all. Let’s take Green as an example he was born a woman but by his definition his gender was masculine not feminine. So for over forty years of his life he lived as a woman before he had surgery done so that he would appear to everyone as what he feels he is, a man.

Green’s target audience is moderates and people who might never have even given the concept of gender a second thought. These are the people who are still on the fence about what gender is and what it should be. Green picks these people because it gives him a chance to persuade more people to his side so that they can support his point of view. And maybe it’ll gain some speed and society will change to make life for him and other transgenders transsexuals transgendersexuals or whatever it is they are, I don’t remember and the internet ain’t working right now, so I can’t just look it up and I’m afraid if I get up from doing this I won’t get back to it, so what was I talking about again? Oh, right trans-.

Honestly, I”m one of those people who has never really thought about gender, I always thought it was the same as sex and it’s just what your born as. Now are some of my friends gay? Yes. Have I ever sat and thought about why they’re that way and not “straight”? No. Are they born that way or is it a result of their environment? I dunno. Should we take a look at gender and try to redefine it? Maybe, or we might just need to come up with a new word like genso or something. These are some of the issues that will be addressed during my lifetime and I should take a stance on it rather than just leave it up to politicians, but right now I’m just not sure.
